Preparing for your meeting

Prior to attending your appointment, we may request details of the documents to be notarised (number and type of documents) an a copy of any instructions you may have received from the country of origin.

Proof of identify is required where a document is being witnessed, in the form of an original passport or drivers licence.

If you require a certified copy of an original document, you must bring the original document to the appointment.

Ensure you have your papers in order and ready to sign.  Complete any details required on the document but refrain from signing until you are at your appointment.

Legalisation

Once a document is notarised, it may require an Apostille or Authentication certificate from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) before it will be accepted by a foreign country.  This is referred to as legalisation.  Legalisation verifies that the a notary's signature, stamp or seal on the document is genuine.

Many countries accept original notarial certificates without any requirement for legalisation.  You must ask the authority or organisation in the country of origin whether legalisation is required.

You may contact DFAT directly for an appointment for an Apostille or Authentication certificate.  We are able to attend at DFAT on your behalf, or attend to consular legalisation, but these services are subject to additional fees.
